Karlheinz Essl performs on a laptop computer that he has transformed into a live electronic musical instrument. The result is exciting and musical. You just won't hear these sounds anywhere else. He performs solo and in duets and trios, responding with sensitivity to fellow musicians, producing fascinating sound transformations, creating spontaneous surprises, and moving quickly from loops to cacophony to tiny clips of vocal sounds to all kinds of textures and ideas. He does all this with his m@ze°2 performance software. (Joel Chadabe)

Born 1960 in Vienna. Austrian composer, improviser and performer. He studied composition with Friedrich Cerha and musicology in Vienna (doctorate 1989 with a thesis on Anton Webern). As a double bassist, he played in chamber and jazz ensembles. Besides writing instrumental music and composing electronic music, he performs on his own electronic instrument m@ze°2, develops software environments for computer-aided composition and creates generative sound and video environments - often in collaboration with artists from other fields.

Essl served as composer-in-residence at the Darmstadt summer courses (1990-94) and completed a commission for IRCAM. In 1997, he was presented at the Salzburg Festival with portrait concerts and sound installations.

Between 1995-2006, Karlheinz Essl was teaching Algorithmic Composition at the Anton Bruckner University in Linz. Since 2007 he is professor of composition for electro-acoustic and experimental music at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.

Lasse-Marc Riek (1975, Germany) uses different forms of expression in his producing. His works are interdisciplinary and can be conceived as groups of works of both visual art (action and conceptual art) and sound art. His art of sound can be described in terms such as acoustic ecology, bio-acoustics and public recording. Here, Riek uses acoustic field recordings, storing them with different recording media, editing, archiving and presenting them in different contexts.

Bioacoustic compositions from signal sounds of the European bat

Since 2003 calls and social sounds of the bats were collected by means of stereo-microphones and ultrasonic-frequency-detectors. Social sounds like the communication between mother and child are perceptible for the human ear, while detection calls, which serve orientation and hunt, move within the ultrasonic range and are not audible for humans. During several excursions in co-operation with bat researchers of the Society for Nature Conservation Segebergs the calls of various kinds of bat were recorded.

The compositions are oriented at impulses, which are produced during the act of the hunt by these mammals. The bat changes the pulse rate of its signals when it approaches its prey (insect). The closer it gets, the shorter the rate of the signals become. Through this technology the hunters of the night" gain a very clear picture of their surrounding and finally can get hold of their prey.
